The University of East Sarajevo (UES) is a prominent public higher education institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, established in 1992. It is recognized as the first accredited public university in the country and is one of two public universities in the Republic of Srpska, as well as one of eight in Bosnia and Herzegovina
UES traces its academic heritage to the Sarajevo Seminary founded in 1882, the first Serbian high school in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which provided both theological and secular education. The university itself was established in response to the Bosnian War, inheriting the tradition and academic staff from the original University of Sarajevo.
According to the SCImago Institutions Rankings, the University of East Sarajevo is regarded as one of the leading higher education institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was the first public university in the country to receive higher education accreditation.
